January 2013
Members are encouraged to enrol for the Coursera Equine Nutrition course starting on 28 January 2013. The course is free of charge and runs for 5 weeks online with short video lectures which can be watched at times to suit you. The course is being run by Dr Jo-Anne Murray of Edinburgh University who heads up the online MSc in Equine Science.
CHG member Andrea Jones has already taken courses with Coursera - "the courses have been very well run, challenging at times but very interesting, with lecturers who really know their subjects. I am enrolled on courses for most of this year!".
Many thanks to CHG member Sheila for bringing the Coursera courses to our attention!

Events
There are several events planned over the next month - see Diary Dates.
For local (non-CHG) events, see Events in the Charente - there's a randonnee this Sunday (13th May) at Champsac.
Hosts needed
We often have talks that require a TV (and DVD/video player). Would anyone be willing to host a talk who has a large screen TV, ideally a modern TV that takes an SD card (or similar - there's generally something a laptop can link into)? It doesn't have to be huge, just a reasonable size to show PowerPoint presentations or DVDs. And obviously seating for a few people. Contact us if you can help.
Adverts
Please note we now have a page for adverts - members and non-members.
There are currently adverts for puppies, ponies, saddles and boots for sale.
Please email details of any adverts you would like posted on the website to [email protected], or contact us. Remember the website is not just for members, so please include the contact details you would like to appear with your advert.
"Les Amis du Cheval d'Asnières"
CHG members Yannick, Marion & Sophie set up the Association "Les Amis du Cheval d'Asnières" last November to share activities with horse owners and lovers (whether they own a horse or not), and already have over 40 members. They are happy to help people with riding or driving, and can help those who want to get into the French system either with the Galop exams or other requirements. Yannick is a fully qualified BHSII and he works as an instructor, teaching trainee instructors in France. He is also a CSO judge, and competes in show jumping and eventing, and both he and Marion compete in driving and are Galop 7 in driving. Details are on the Association's website: www.cheval-asnieres.ffe.com
Yannick has written several articles in English on keeping and riding horses in France (on the Club page):
The "Galops" explained
Competing your own horse in France
"Le Trec" explained
Have you declared the horses in your care on your premises?
"Declaring that you have horses on your property is compulsory. Failing to do so could cost you a mere 450€ fine.
They don't have to be your own horses. And the fact that the horses have been declared to the Haras Nationaux (or IFCE as it is now known) is not sufficient.
The aim of registering with the IFCE that horses are on your premises is so that the IFCE has a map of where each and every horse is in France, should there be an epidemic of some kind or other. The IFCE and the veterinary service will then be able to act efficiently in taking measures to control the spread of infections. This decree took place in July 2010 and failing to register can now be sanctioned by a 450€ fine.
Any physical or moral person who is responsible for a horse, whether on a temporary or permanent basis, is a "détenteur d'équidés". What you declare is not the number of horses or their details, but just the fact that you have some (or one) horse(s). Should you stop having any horse at some stage you should then unregister".... (continued on the Les Amis website).
Yannick has also very kindly offered to clarify any other areas of life with horses in France for members.
Rug washing
As we may finally be able to leave rugs off, don't forget Stella's Rug Wash near Confolens is operating again.
All Nikwax products used, machines computerised and capacity of 50lb/23kg so rugs have got plenty of space to move around. Also do floor rugs. Can collect and deliver. 25 euro for filthy outdoor rug to be dehaired, washed, reproofed and dried at low temperature.
May be discounts for several rugs so worth getting together with friends.

May is laminitis month!
New cases of laminitis are being reported every day due to the flush of grass we are having - many horses getting it for the first time. 3 visits by 2 vets recently failed to spot a textbook case of insulin resistant laminitis - the horse was paddling with all 4 feet, bounding digital pulses, depressed, off food, unwilling to turn (shuffling backwards and forwards), lying down for hours at a time, raised pulse (60 bpm) but no temperature, unable to hold a hoof up for long, muscle tension in quarters. The teenaged cob was overweight with fat pads, a cresty neck and fat in the hollows above the eyes, and her feet showed symptoms of chronic laminitis. X-rays confirmed rotation in all 4 feet. By the time a laminitic crisis like this occurs, the horse has usually had laminitis that has gone unnoticed for some time - learn to spot the signs to prevent an acute attack: Chronic laminitis Symptoms of laminitis and what to do. SLL White Horses charity is looking for stop-overs - can you help?
The SLL White Horses charity is looking for stop-overs for their 2012 charity ride near Angouleme, also in northern Dordogne and Dept 79. They need a fenced field where horses can graze and humans can camp within 5 kms of their route. Stop-overs are needed at:
24650 Chancelade 22/06/12
24310 Valeuil 23/06/12
Leguillac-de-Cercles 24/06/12
La Rochette 16110 on 30/06/12
Mansle 16230 on 01 and 02/07/12
and several sites in Dept. 79.

and several sites in Dept. 79.
Their requirements are a field(s) for 11 horses (2 Comtois and 2 Normandy Cobs, 6 Camarguese, and a Friesian) with grazing and/or hay, water, electric point for extension lead, somewhere for 13 people to camp or be accommodated simply, toilet(s) and a shower would be a luxury! They will have their own electric fencing but a fenced field would be preferable. There will also be 2 carriages, a car and a couple of dogs
Hopefully people will offer help for this very worthwhile and exciting venture. The ride will take about 6 months altogether which is quite a chunk out of their lives and shows real commitment to the cause of helping young people, both handicapped and in other ways disadvantaged.
More details and the route here:
http://www.sllassoc.com/
"The SLL White Horses charity is a Franco-British registered charity with humanitarian, social and environmentally conscious aims.
SLL selects horses from the Camargue in southern France from where they are ridden across France and England by a team including disadvantaged youngsters and are finally, after this long 6 month journey of 1800 kms and 85 overnight stops, donated to Riding for the Disabled centres in England and France.
With the experience of the 2005 and 2008 projects, the SLL 2012 Caravan of Hope will once again unite young people and horses in aid of children and adults with disabilities."
If anyone can help, or knows anyone with a field in those areas or anywhere near their route who may be willing to help, please email [email protected] and we will pass you on to the organisers.

Summer show at Centre de Beauregard 22 July 2012
The summer show at the Centre de Beauregard will be on 22 July 2012.
The trade stands were hugely popular last year. If anyone is interested in having a trade stand (doesn't have to be horse/dog related) at this year's show, please contact Jacki at the Centre de Beauregard, tel: 05 49 87 05 59 or email [email protected]. Deadline for booking a stand is 20 May.
Jacki is also looking for a few more helpers for the show - such as people to supervise the handy pony class, judges assistants, parking monitors. Please contact Jacki if you can help.

March 2012
Members are reporting lots of ticks in some areas - ticks carry piroplasmosis and Lyme disease - horses should be checked for ticks and ticks removed daily.
The lack of rain is slowing the grass growth in many areas, but the sunny days will mean that sugars are being stored in the grass, so the laminitis risk is high, and when it does rain the grass is likely to grow rapidly, so access to grass should be limited for horses with insulin resistance/Equine Metabolic Syndrome (prone to laminitis). For further information about laminitis, see www.thelaminitissite.org
